What factors do you need to consider when choosing industrial coatings for facilities maintenance applications?

As more opportunities present themselves as operators look to plan and implement ever faster turnaround maintenance programmes, the need for specialised maintenance paints continues to grow. But there are challenges that only the most experience product innovators are capable of overcoming.

Base material

There are options in using epoxy, polyurethane, chlorinated rubber or water-based paints for maintenance projects. All have their relative pros and cons and the priority should be choosing the base material that will give the results required.

Substrate

Different products react and respond differently to the surface being applied to. Depending on whether it is concrete, aluminium, galvanised steel or one of a number of plastics – and whether they are new, aged or previously coated – certain base materials will be more appropriate than others.

Special formulations

Understanding the precise application and time span for the use of a coating is paramount to specifying the right product. Different materials and uses will bring different attributes such as slip resistance, chemical resistance, super quick drying, enhanced durability or greater adhesion to prominence.

Durability vs usage

Any type of painted surface that is used extensively, will need to be retreated. Depending on the size and scale of the environment, this might be quarterly or annually.

Temperature

Some materials work better than others in high or low temperatures. Most maintenance paint drying times are their most effective at 20°C.

Environment

There is unquestionably a greater drive towards specifying and using less harmful paints. As the industry moves more towards water-based formulations, this will meet some environmental objectives but possibly have an impact on upkeep and maintenance.
